When it comes to self-advocating only a few people will understand the meaning behind it. Nonetheless, its benefits specify it.
What does it mean to be a self-advocate? Self-advocating is the ability to communicate your needs. People who advocate for themselves are more likely to thrive in school etc... A person can learn to self-advocate at any age.
Being a good Self-advocate possesses benefits for children and adults who learn and think on various levels. Those who know how to advocate well do better in school, work and life. People frequently feel confident in what they are learning and doing.
Self-advocating also creates independence. And it authorizes people to find solutions to problems that others may not be aware of.
Let's break down the three key components:

- Knowing what support you need that will help.
- Communicating to others about these needs.

Katrina is a college student and still going through college is very frustrating. Especially, dealing with the financial aspect of navigating through school. She has visited the financial aid office numerous times. She was told at one point she qualified. The next point is sorry she needs to retake her general education. How is that? since she has been out of high school for some years now, she needs to retake her general education over again to get a letter grade. Her high school does not give out letter grades to students in Special Education.
Self-advocating there is definitely a struggle. But, Self-advocating for Accommodations was very easy as pie.
